The Abbaye is a nice small boutique hotel located in the center of Beaugency. I don’t think the “Grand” part of the hotel name is right. It might have been once, but now a days it it a good hotel very nicely located at the Loire river banks in the old abbey of Beaugency.

For less than a hundred euros the hotel isn’t expensive and offers a great price performance.

Built in the early 11th century, the Beaugency Abbey stood the test of time and is ranked as one of the historic heritages today. This religious building was renovated several times, especially after the wars of religion. It accommodated the council where Louis VII’s wedding with Aliénor d’Aquitaine was declared void, where the One hundred’s years’ war took place and where Jeanne d’Arc freed the city from captivity.

The Abbey became a hotel in the early 20th century. Since then, the owners have been renovating the building, while still keeping its architecture and origin spirit. The old monastic cells were changed into rooms; the enormous monumental staircase still dominates the middle of the abbey. The chevet, the carved capitals and other bas-reliefs have been preserved and some sort of religious spirit still prevails on the site.

The decoration is in communion with the building and spreads this unique atmosphere in all over the place.

One of the best breakfasts we had during our valley trip was for sure in l’Abbaye.
