Hotel New York ****

The Hotel New York is the former head office of the Holland America Line and is located on the “Kop van Zuid” in the center of Rotterdam. It was there where the big luxury passenger ships started their route to New York for almost a century. It has a great history.

The hotel has a very interesting and beautiful Jugendstil architecture, contributing to its history. From the hotel and her terras, you have a great view over the river Meuse. The river ends in the North Sea and hosts one of the largest ports in the world.

The hotel can be reached via the road by bike, car or public transport. That said it is much more fun to take the water taxi. From Hotel New York you can take the water taxi to the other side of the river for a drink in the city. One of the landing place for the water taxi is the Mainport Design Hotel, a nice place for a drink and bite as well.

Now-a-days, people come here to sleep, celebrate, eat, drink and do business in a special atmosphere. As soon as you enter the building, you can feel it: this is where it all happened. The sense of nostalgia is everywhere – from the cast-iron hotel staircase and the numerous trunks and pictures of emigrants to the former offices of its past directors.

Hotel New York is one of the places to be in the summer.

The views from the terrace over the river are spectacular. So when the temperature hits 25c, get a table and enjoy a drink or have dinner there. I’ve been to New York many times for lunch, dinner or just a drink and liked the price performance. If you want to see more of the city: take the water taxi.

The building has been a national heritage site since 2000. The Dutch singer Anouk wrote her album “Hotel New York” in the hotel.
