Restaurant Mamma Mia was a last call coming down on the A2 motorway and a nice surprise. Not only did we enjoy a very good dinner but we were also pleasantly surprised by the location in the beautiful old center of the small city of Vianen, the most south located village within the province of Utrecht. Especially in the summertime, the restaurant offer a nice ambiance on the beautiful terrace located between the church an a small canal.
Village history
Vianen the city. Some 3400 years ago, the first settlements in the village Vianen, but the village was often plagued by floods which residents always went to live somewhere else. Around the year 1000 AD there were only final settlements. In 1336, Willem van Duivenvoorde, the developer of Vianen with his wife Heilwich van Vianen the first city rights Vianen. William explained Vianen as fortified. The city has several defenses, such as the city walls and the Lek gate. The city lies at a strategic location on the Lek. Later, the city was in the New Dutch Waterline.
Restaurant
We experienced a pure Italian taste in Mamma Mia. The dinner menu is a compilation of specialties of the authentic Italian cuisine prepared with fresh local produce. Besides many offerings for pasta and pizza lovers the menu also includes a large selection of meat and fish.
My starter was the Antipasto plate with cold Italian cuts from the dry aged cabinet with olives , sun dried tomatoes and balsamic onion. For sure one of the better antipasto’s I’ve had. As a main dish I had a dry aged ribeye with bacon, fried leeks, mushrooms and small risotto potato balls. I will come back again maybe to have the same dishes or to try one of the other options.
Although the white house wine wasn’t too bad, I would love to see something like a nice white Bulgarini on the wine list. This is one of my favourite Italian white wines. If so, for sure I will come back!
