Valkenburg is a nice city in the southern province of the Netherlands. Hidden between the moss-green hills, in the heart of the ‘Heuvelland’ nature reserve, sparkles the marlstone town of Valkenburg.

Caves

The caves are known for their historical and cultural significance. These caves were formed over centuries through the mining of marl, a type of limestone. The extensive network of tunnels and passages created as a result of this mining is what constitutes these caves. They have served as hiding places during wars and conflicts, most notably during World War II. The caves provided shelter to the local population during bombing raids.

Inside the caves, you can find numerous carvings and artworks on the walls. These range from simple graffiti to more elaborate drawings and sculptures, some of which date back centuries. They provide a unique insight into the history and culture of the region.

The Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) is another notable cave in Valkenburg. This cave also features wall paintings, inscriptions, and sculptures. It is connected to the ruins of Valkenburg Castle, adding an extra layer of historical interest.

Christmas market

Valkenburg is famous for its unique Christmas market held within the caves. This annual event transforms the caves into a magical underground marketplace, with stalls selling Christmas goods, decorations, and traditional Dutch treats. The Christmas market is one of the largest in the Netherlands and attracts many visitors to the town. When in the snow, a pure fairytail.

Open air theater

The Open Air Theater is a unique venue known for its natural beauty. The theater is set in a natural hollow surrounded by lush greenery, providing a scenic backdrop for performances. This natural amphitheater setting creates an intimate and engaging atmosphere for both performers and the audience. Due to its natural configuration and the use of stone in its construction, the theater boasts excellent acoustics, enhancing the performance experience. We were there attending the performance of Massada, a Dutch band.

Wellness

Thermae 2000 is a very large and well-known spa and wellness resort in Valkenburg. It is famed for its thermal baths and a wide range of relaxation and wellness facilities. Situated atop the Cauberg hill, Thermae 2000 offers panoramic views of the surrounding Limburg landscape. This location not only provides a serene setting conducive to relaxation but also adds a scenic charm to the whole experience.

Discover Limburg

Valkenburg is an ideal place to explore the province of Limburg. It is close to Maastricht, the province capital, a short distance from the Belgium and German boarders.

There are many hotels in Valkenburg. Alternatively you can stay in a holiday home in the city or close by. We rented a holiday home on the "Kasteeldomein De Cauberg", next to the Casino and Thermae 2000. An ideal location.
